For the girl about to go through sorority recruitment
Recruitment is intimidating.
No matter how much advice, coaching, or how many connections you have, sorority recruitment can be daunting. To some degree, you're going to feel as though you need to extend your personality and social skills, and look your absolute best every single day. Take this as your sign to breathe. If you let it, this process can really get to your head (and heart) in the wrong ways, but it doesn't have to.
When you hear "be yourself" from every TikTok or Instagram post about Recruitment advice, they mean it. Being yourself is the best thing you can do besides leaning on the Lord rather than your own strength during this process. Don't try to be someone you're not; God created you for a reason.
Coming from a girl on the "other side" of recruitment, we want you to have fun and feel like you're able to be your genuine self. You can expect it to be tiring, but let God do the heavy lifting. Keep reading to see a few pieces of advice paired with verses that helped me a lot during this process last year!
Find rest in Jesus.
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
- Matthew 11:28-30
Try to avoid comparing yourself to others.
You are altogether beautiful, my darling. Beautiful in every way.
- Song of Songs 4:7
Don't let yourself dwell on anxious thoughts. Pray when they arise.
Cast all your anxieties on him, for he cares for you.
- 1 Peter 5:7
In exhaustion, let the joy of the Lord carry you.
My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart. He is mine forever.
- Psalm 73:26
If it is meant for you, you won't have to force it.
For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.
- Psalm 84:11
You are already loved, chosen, valued, and worthy. Jesus already proved that by sacrificing himself on the Cross so that we could live eternally with him in heaven. Don't let this process cause you to forget that. Regardless of the opinions of others, Jesus already chose you as his beloved daughter, which is worth SO much more than being chosen by a sorority!
Even if you end up deciding that being in a sorority isn't for you, remember it's just a club. It doesn't make you any less valuable than anyone else. God's Word will be able to encourage you better than any other advice I, or anyone else, can give.
Don't neglect time with the Lord during this process. He can meet you even in getting ready or between rush parties! No prayer is too big or too small for our God. He hears you and cares deeply for you!
