Light in the Darkness
Dealing with hurt, grief, or sadness are all common, human experiences. Because of sin, we live in a broken world, and we will experience all of these things in life. With this information, we have two choices: let it consume you, or turn to something greater than the hurt.
No matter how flawless they are in our minds, people are imperfect, and will let us down at times. If you’ve seen this and decided to trust in yourself instead, you’re bound to still wind up hurt. No one can do it all.
Life is hard; people leave, people let us down, you’ll face rejection. Put your faith and hope into someone that will never fail you. Trust in someone that has never broken a promise. Trust in someone who loved you so much He died for you.
Hope in the Lord
Jesus will always save a seat for you at His table. Jesus will always chase after you, even if you reject Him at first. Remember that you are already chosen. You are already loved more than you can imagine.
In John 16:33, Jesus tells us this: “I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have overcome the world.” Becoming a Christian doesn’t mean we’re immune to bad things happening to us, but it means we have a cure.
Hope. Hope in Jesus alone has gotten me through the hardest, lowest points of my life. Hope in Jesus has been my comfort through grief, both grieving the loss of loved ones' lives and failed friendships, deep sadness, and so much more.
When you choose to trust in Jesus to be your light in the darkness, God can use your suffering for His greater purpose. He can turn anything around if you trust in Him. This doesn’t mean that He’ll make everything turn out the way you want it to, but He can use those situations to bring you closer to Him, and He’ll use it for good. Even if it doesn’t make sense in the moment, God knows every detail and is always working.
Jesus is our light in the darkness, and the darkness will never overcome it. Jesus already won. No matter what you’re going through, God is bigger. When Jesus was on earth, He endured the most trials. He lived a perfect life, but He still mourned with people, felt pain, felt anger. Just because He was fully God did not mean that He was exempt from experiencing hurt.
He is able to empathize with our pain because He endured the most pain. He felt the entirety of every single past, present, and future sin on His shoulders. The pain we feel from falling into sin just once, He felt about one billion times more (and more!).
Firm Foundation
There’s an analogy in the Bible that is about two men. One man built his house on sand, thinking he could design his house to withstand anything, regardless of the unsteady foundation. The other man built his house on rocks. The man who built his house on the sand was foolish, because after one storm hit, it was destroyed. The man who built his house upon the rocks was wise, because he trusted that the rock would hold it sturdy, not because of anything he could design on his own.
The lesson from this analogy is that no matter how self-reliant you may think you are, you aren’t invincible. We’re human, so there’s going to come a time when a storm will hit, and we’ll either fall apart, or remain strong because of our firm foundation in Jesus Christ.
Admitting we need Jesus isn’t a sign of weakness, but spiritual intelligence, and something we need to remind ourselves of daily.
Whether you've been following Jesus for 10 years or 10 seconds, the need for Jesus never lessens. Seek Him as the light in the darkness, and let His light of the Holy Spirit fill you and lift you up today.
Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” -John 8:12
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. -James 1:17
